Celebrating a Life Through Portraits and Memory | Legacy Photography by Brian Powers

Last year, I had the pleasure of photographing my good friend Jim in my studio. I included a few of my favorite film slides from his younger days.

I met Jim just about five years ago. I bought a camera he was selling and he invited me into his home to share some of his work-portrait he took of Ansel Adams, among other iconic shots. We initially bonded over photography and hiking stories, and as our friendship grew, we had deep, intimate conversations about life, obstacles and mental health. He was sharp, witty and always looking for an opening for a joke. He taught me a lot and was delighted to share his life with me.

He scaled countless mountain peaks all over the world, and it was unreal how he could remember in detail every step of the routes he took.

To have a friendship where you can ask someone anything, and without any reservation, get pure, honest answers, whether they might reflect negatively, is a true gift that he shared with me.

It could have been the middle of July or Halloween. After every phone call and visit, he never said goodbye, only Happy New Year.

As I left his house Friday, I told him to call me on Sunday. He said, What do you want me to call you? I said, Hopefully something good, and Happy New Year. He said, Thank you, my friend.

All he wanted to do with the time he had left was laugh. I had my dad joke book that I planned to bring up and read with him, but we didn’t get that chance. Jim passed away at his home Saturday night with his wife and dogs by his side.

Happy New Year, Jim. I’ll miss you dearly, my friend.

Portraits can become more than images over time. They become anchors to memory, personality, and the stories that define someone’s life. Legacy sessions are designed to honor those chapters, whether celebrating a long career, a lifetime of adventure, or simply the presence someone carries in the world. Photographs preserve the details we never want to forget, from the laughter in someone’s voice to the experiences that shaped them.
