Golden Hour Park Family Session in Salt Lake City, Utah | Photographer Brian Powers

Green grass, golden light filtering through the trees, and a family that couldn’t stop smiling and loving on each other. This park family session in Salt Lake City, Utah, had everything a family photo session should: parents who let their kids be kids without the pressure of smiling for the camera, and a family simply enjoying each other in a beautiful outdoor setting.

The Setting: Salt Lake City Park Photography

We met at a park in Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City’s parks are well suited to family photography. The open lawns give kids room to move, and the mature trees create soft, warm light as the sun lowers. For this session, the golden light trickling through the branches added a glow to every frame without needing anything fancy.

A Mix of Posed and Candid Family Photos

Most families want both kinds of photos, so this session had both.

Posed portraits: Classic family photos with all four together, plus portraits of the kids and of mom and dad as a couple. These are the images that end up framed, in holiday cards, and on grandparents’ walls.

Candid moments: Walking hand in hand, laughing at each other, and the small interactions between a brother and sister. Candid photos are often what families treasure most, because they look and feel like the family really is.

Together they make a gallery that feels timeless rather than tied to a trend.

Why Families Feel Comfortable With Brian

Clients often tell Brian they feel comfortable during their session, and it’s one of the things he hears most. Many people are nervous about being photographed, and parents worry about whether their kids will cooperate. Brian keeps sessions relaxed and unhurried, so parents can enjoy being present with their kids instead of stressing about the camera. When families are at ease, the smiles and laughter in the photos are real.

Not a Park Person? Try an In-Home Family Session

A park isn’t the only option. If your family would be more comfortable in a familiar space, an in-home session is a great alternative. Brian’s film-inspired in-home family session in Southern California is a good example. Soft window light, a relaxed pace, and candid moments between parents, their daughter, and the family dog gave the gallery warm, cinematic tones and a lived-in feel.

In-home sessions work especially well for families with young children, for families who prefer a quieter setting, and for anyone who wants photos that reflect everyday life at home.
